Prelude

A Hero's Life

His name was Jozef Anton Poniatowski, prince of Poland, a man who for as long as he lived remained ever faithful to his ideals, ideals that repeatedly forced him to forsake the royal courts of Vienna, St. Petersburg, and Warsaw to court death on battlefields throughout Europe. Woven throughout with courage was the tapestry of his remarkable life, and honor was the virtue he valued above all others. He sought neither the possession of power nor the glory that motivates many a mortal. He was a man who to the very end endeavored to defend the liberty of the Polish people, a man resolved to restore, no matter the cost, all that Poland had lost to her oppressors. If ever there lived a man whose life was heroic, such a man was Prince Jozef Poniatowski.

I finished the book in about 4 days because I had a hard time putting it down once I started. I did not know anything about Prince Poniatowski before reading this book. As I read I began to really care about his main character Prince Józef Antoni Poniatowski and found myself quietly cheering him on at times and grieving with him at others.

So unlike the spoiled children of a prototypical royal family, he not only had strong core values but remained true to his values and served with honor.

Despite brilliant efforts on the battlefield his life was for the most part a losing battle. Luckily he seemed to recognized that there can be honor on both the winning and the losing side.

To a warrior who lives his values, it makes no difference what history will eventually write.

Doing your duty when called to do it is where the question is answered.

When Prince Poniatowski died fighting at Leipzig, my only thought was that I was glad he had found the rest he never could achieve while living.

A remarkable man's life brought to light by a remarkable author.

I only hope that Duane will write other books that I can add to my short BWR collection. (Books Worth Reading)

Trumpets of Triumph edition by Duane N Kline Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I had absolutely no idea this man existed before I read this book. Now I know he was a truly great man who devoted his life to the service of his country, or to what became left of it.

The author has written exceptionally well, and my only complaint is there is no bibliography.

Still, I learned so much, and was so inspired... it's an easy 5 stars. I found myself constantly highlighting passages because they were so good.

Buy it.
