American society is increasingly supportive of homosexuals, gay marriage and L.G.B.T. rights in general. Evangelical churches in America, largely, are not. Christianity is at a cross-roads in the United States. For years, evangelical denominations have condemned homosexuals, funded organizations that practice "reparative therapy" as a means of "curing" homosexuality, and created a culture promising anyone can "pray away the gay" through prayer and obedience to God.
"Modern Day Hyde" details the true story and duality of J.W. Hough. At a young age, J.W. embraced Christianity and soon after realized he was gay.For over three decades, J.W. attempted to live as a straight man in public to appease his church, family and friends. In private, he was promiscuous, guilt-ridden, confused and depressed. On the outside, he became a loving husband, devoted father and an esteemed professor at a prestigious Christian university. In the shadows, J.W. struggled to keep gay lovers and grand lies from being exposed.
A tale both cautionary and celebratory, "Modern Day Hyde" challenges church leaders, family and friends to reconsider assumptions of homosexuality and provides a poignant, yet powerful example of being true to oneself.
Modern Day Hyde eBook JW Hough Nathan Cook
J. W. Hough's Modern Day Hyde tells the true story of a "Best Little Boy in the World" who realizes that he is gay, despite many desperate attempts to conform to the expectations otherwise of his family, his church and his native South. This intelligent and talented writer and professor did not accept, or at least did not fully realize, his sexual orientation until he had already established himself in a heterosexual marriage, had children and had settled into a promising career at a fundamentalist university. The author is searching, authentic, fearless - and perhaps more candid than some readers might expect - in examining his life, before, during, and after he came out. Hough's book will interest and instruct gays and lesbians who came out later in life, and the non-gays who know, love, or struggle to come to terms with someone who takes this journey. Modern Day Hyde should also make those of us who came out as teenagers grateful for the lessons we learned at a time in our lives when family and society may have allowed us more latitude for error, exploration or confusion in our direction.
J. W. Hough gives us the story of an individual who is, in the end, truly far more human than he is anything like a Modern Day Hyde.

Modern Day Hyde eBook JW Hough Nathan Cook Reviews
Wow! To be honest, I'm not the biggest book worm but I absolutely love this book. Opens your eyes to a whole new outlook on life and is quite interesting ( Love it!!
This book was beyond amazing. As a young man who has lived the troubled life of a doubled life, i know all too well the struggles and not only being true to yourself but being able to freely live. This book, from cover to cover, gave me an insight on what seemed as my own life. While reading i found myself laughing, being saddened, and still realizing the truth of some of my current struggles. The author gave the truth to his own life and struggle in hopes of helping us, gay men who are not fully comfortable with who we are, gain a satisfaction with our true happiness.
This is a gut-wrenching, heart-warming, twisty, turny tale of truth & love. I would & do recommend this to anyone who loves to read. But plan on reading the whole thing in one day because I couldn't put it down!
A very awesome book. I actually read it because he was my professor, meeting and knowing(for that short semester) Mr. Hough you can tell he's very intelligent and insightful, but did I think he would of written one of the best books ever? Honestly no, but I was pleasantly suprised . I'm not gay and wasn't raised overly conservative, but I did connect with the search for authenticity in life. His words took me on a journey through his life and I'm very lucky and hopeful others get to take the same journey.
I love reading personal accounts of people who have gone through oppression (i.e. Roots, Mouz) and have always wanted to read something from the perspective of a closeted gay man entrenched in the evangelical Christian movement of the deep South. If you have ever wondered what that was like, this work will give you a detailed, straight forward, brutally honest look at exactly what that's like. The author's self honesty and fairness towards all people in the book are commendable, and his genuine expression of love and tolerance even for those who have clearly wronged him are admirable. You will NOT find an attack on anyone's beliefs, religious or otherwise, at any point in this book.
While the reflections and content are excellent, the delivery is less than ideal. There is nothing about the writing that makes it unreadable, but also nothing that stands out or really wows the reader. The prose is very plain, and aside from a few minor grammatical errors is very clear. Having had the author as a professor for multiple communications classes, I can say that he is an excellent in person communicator with a very stylized delivery of speech as well as very articulate mannerisms and gestures, and that as such may be used to relying on these measures to enhance his message. Unfortunately, it is impossible to convey such things in writing, and much of the color and flavor of the story is lost. Perhaps future writing projects of his will improve this area.
TLDR Author is a great orator rather than a writer, but his story is nonetheless very interesting and at 3$ is better than a bargain. I would definitely recommend this.
I'll admit--I initially only bought the book because I know the author. However, it was an engaging read and I recommend it fully. It is an autobiographical memoir about a Christian man's dealing with his homosexuality. Hough offered a very unique perspective on what life in the closet is like and how difficult it is to hide something so large about yourself. If you have conservative values, then you will be disappointed with Hough's choices, but you will still fully see and understand how they were the only choices he could make.
I found Jason Hough's story to be very moving, and above all an honest account of his struggles. As a gay man who came out late in life, after being in a long marriage and fathering a very loved daughter, I found much of his story brought tears to my eyes. I grew up in a small southern town, and experienced many of the internal conflicts he described. I particularly was moved by how clearly and honestly he wrote about his religious conflicts, his family conflicts, and how heart rendering it was to leave all he had known and valued in his "straight" life.
I believe that many younger gay men and women may not have an understanding of the struggles endured by those from an earlier time and particularly from a geographic area so very different culturally and politically from our eastern and western coasts, and from our large cities. I believe many, many gays and lesbians are going through all these same events in their lives everywhere. I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to understand better the pain and joy of the coming out journey.
